Call for Proposals for Young Scholar Summit Meeting in China

CPGIS, in conjunction with Sichuan University, will organize the CPGIS young scholar summit meeting in China in this summer. This year the theme is: Advanced geospatial technology in water-related disaster prevention.

With the economic booming and west development, a number of water-related problems have become a concern, including flooding, soil erosion and sedimentation, debris flow, barrier lakes from earthquake, nonpoint source pollution, stream ecological degradation, etc. Given the vulnerable environment in the west and increasing human disturbance, it is essential to understand the dynamics and impacts of human activities and global climate change on fundamental processes of hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, water quality, and ecology in order to develop sustainable policies to ensure economic prosperity and ecological integrity in the west.

Geospatial technology (Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Global Positioning System (GPS)) plays a vital role in implementing the aforementioned targets. However, the knowledge of such technology is still lacking and in great demand among academic and professionals at the host institute. One quick and effective solution to remedy this problem is through training and workshop presentation provided by abroad young scholars.

Time: June 27-30 at Sichuan University

Organizer: The international association for Chinese Professionals in Geographical Information Sciences (CPGIS)

Local Hosts: Sichuan University

Format: The participation will be composed of two parts: an open lecture and a research presentation. Each Young scholar from CPGIS needs to give an open lecture to the general public. The topic of lecture will focus on at least one geospatial technique or modeling methodology at his/her specialty. The lecture is estimated to last about one hour. Each Young scholar will also deliver a research presentation that best represents his/her research.

CPGIS is currently soliciting a one-page proposal from outstanding individuals who are interested in participating this event. The proposal should include a brief description of your proposed lecture content and research presentation. The final selection will be made based on the merit of proposal, the relevance of the proposal to the theme of the project, as well as the qualification of applicants.

Cost:  Local hosts will provide domestic round trip tickets, local lodging and a city tour. After the event, the tour to Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong will be arranged at the participants’ own expenses with the logistic help from local host.

Please send your proposals and C.V. before May 10 to Shixiong Hu at shu@po-box.esu.edu.  Selected individuals will be noticed via email thereafter.
