This year’s CPGIS Excellence in Education Award went to Professors Lin Liu and Anrong Dang, to recognize their outstanding contribution to the GIS community!

The awards were issued at the 2014 International Geoinformatics Conference at Kaoshiung.

Professor Lin Liu

Professor Lin Liu has a BS and MS degree from Peking University and a PhD from The Ohio State University. His career in GIScience started in 1983 when he applied Satellite images for seaport site selection. He was a leader in early GIS software development in China, including the development of a raster-based GIS package named PURSIS at Peking University from 1985 to 1987, and the development of a vector-based GIS package named LSYS for the first nationwide land inventory at the State Land Administration from 1988 to 1990. He was among the first group of overseas experts to facilitate the evaluation of domestic GIS software in China from 1996 to 1997.

His main contributions to GIScience education include the following:

1) Student Advising and Teaching

- He has been supervising over 100 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students in GIScience.

- As a lecturer at Peking University, he taught GIS and remote sensing courses from 1987 to 1988.

- As a faculty member at University of New Orleans and University of Cincinnati, he taught over 10 different GIScience courses, including Cartography, Computer Cartography, Intro to GIS, GIS Urban-economic Applications, GIS Environmental Applications, Advanced GIS and Application Development in Avenue, Advanced GIS and Application Development in ArcObjects, GIS Seminar on Crime Analysis, GIS Seminar on Location Analysis, and GIS Seminar on Geo-simulation.

- His book titled Artificial Crime Analysis Systems: Using Computer Simulations and Geographic Information Systems is first of its kind, and it has become a must-read in the field of crime simulation.

2) Program Development and International Collaboration

- As Head of Geography at University of Cincinnati, he developed the first 2+2 joint undergraduate degree program between Sun Yat-sen University and University of Cincinnati in 2007.  He has supervised over 50 students in this program since 2008. As Vice Dean of International Affairs for the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, he was instrumental in fostering international collaborations in undergraduate education.

- As Co-Director of the Joint Center of GIS and Spatial Analysis at University of Cincinnati, he has generated and secured numerous internship opportunities for students in the field of GIScience.

- As Head of Geography at University, he spearheaded the development of an interdisciplinary program in GIScience. He increased the number of Geography faculty members by 65%, with the main growth area being GIScience.

3) Education and Curriculum Reform

- As Dean of School of Geography and Planning at Sun Yat-sen University, he initiated major reforms in undergraduate education to ensure that the curriculum is more in line with the international trend and that senior faculty members teach more undergraduate courses in GIScience and other related areas. His effort in enhancing undergraduate education is widely recognized at Sun Yat-sen University.

- As Head of Geography in Cincinnati, he spearheaded two major GIS curriculum reforms, significantly enhancing the status and reputation of the GIScience program on campus and nationwide.

4) Enhancing Public Awareness of GIS

- He organized many GIS promotion activities on campus and in the local communities in Cincinnati.

- He organized a large number of international conferences related to GIScience.

- He delivered over 100 public GIS lectures and presentations across many countries of the world.

Professor Anrong Dang

Dr. Anrong Dang is a professor of planning at Tsinghua University. He was first trained as a geographer and now a specialist in GIS applications in urban planning. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Geography from ShaanxiNormalUniversity in 1985,his Mastersin Cartography and Remote Sensingfrom NorthwestUniversity in 1988, and his Ph.D. in Cartography and GIS from ChineseAcademy of Science in 1997. He has been a professor in urban and rural planning at TsinghuaUniversity since 2000.He has participated in many large projects in China with funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and published more than 100 papers and five textbooks. His courses of RS and GIS, such as Introduction of Geo-information Technology (Undergraduate Course), GIS Spatial Analysis and Application for Urban Planning (Graduate Course), RS Principle and Application for Urban Planning (Graduate Course), and Geo-Information Technology for Urban and Rural Planning (Official Training Course) are very popular in Tsinghua University. His RS and GIS Text Books, such as Remote Sensing Image Processing Method and Application Tour Guide for ArcGIS were selected as the practical textbook by many universities.

Dr. Dang has being served CPGIS as regional manager at Mainland China for more than ten years since the year 2000.
