ESRI donated newly released Web GIS books to CPGIS

ESRI recently donated 31 copies of the book Web GIS: Principles and applications to CPGIS (co-authored by Dr. Pinde Fu, a CPGIS member, and Dr. Linjiu Sun; published by ESRI press in October 2010). Working with CPGIS Education Committee, ESRI has shipped out these books to 31 CPGIS members who had requested them.

The following are the updates of the events at different stages.

1. ESRI will donate newly released WebGIS books to CPGIS (Dec., 22, 2010)

Dear CPGIS friends,

PGIS Education Committee obtained a donation of 15 copies of the book “Web GIS: Principles and Applications” and would like give the books to CPGIS members who need them.

The book info, including TOC and chapter 1, can be found at http://esripress.esri.com/display/index.cfm?fuseaction=display&websiteID=188&moduleID=1 and http://www.igsnrr.ac.cn/xwzx/kydt/201009/t20100929_2976482.html

Receivers of the books will be selected on a first come, first served basis (and balanced among multiple countries). If you are interested in learning Web GIS or adding Web GIS to your courses, please reply this email and include your mailing address. If you are selected, the book will be mailed to you by Esri. There will be no cost to you.

The donation came from Esri. Thanks to the support of Esri, and especially Michael Gould, Director of Esri Education Industry Solutions.

2. Upates (Dec. 23, 2010)

Dear CPGIS friends,

Here is a summary of the book donation:

<1> I received about 30 requests for the book.  Every applicant will get a copy as Mike Gould (Esri Education Industry Solutions Director) has agreed to donate more copies to CPGIS.

This morning, I discussed with Mike Gould about the number of applicants. Mike acknowledged that CPGIS was an active and well-respected group in the GIS Education community, and agreed to supply more copies to us.

I will give him a list of names and addresses, and he will have the books mailed out after the New Year holiday (assuming he has enough copies in stock, otherwise, there may be a bit delay).

<2> Every applicant, please make sure your CPGIS membership is current.

This donation is for CPGIS, and I will need to verify your CPGIS membership. If you are not a CPGIS member or your membership has expired, please join CPGIS or renew your membership at your earliest convenience. Otherwise, I cannot give your name/address to Mike.

3. Updates (Jan. 30, 2011)

“CPGIS is an active and well-respected group in the GIS education community. The donation is to support CPGIS members to establish and update Web GIS courses.” Said Dr. Michael Gould, Director of Education Industry Solutions of ESRI.

Amazon describes the book as “Web GIS: Principles and Applications presents a thorough overview of the origins and developments in this emerging platform. New Web technologies addressed include: ArcGIS Server, REST services, JavaScript API/Flex API, and ArcGIS Mobile. This book offers a balance of principles, concepts, and techniques to provide you with an understanding of how Web GIS can revolutionize the way your GIS functions.”

“In today’s tough job market, an understanding of web GIS provides students with a competitive advantage. Web GIS has vast value and applicability to e-government, e-business, e-science, and daily life. The demand for good web GIS professionals is high and pressing.” Dr. Pinde Fu said.

Dr. Fu considers that “(more)ore and more universities are adding or planning to add Web GIS to their curricula. Professors need up-to-date and in-depth teaching materials. Web GIS: Principles and Applications is an important resource for GIS students and professionals who want to learn state-of-the-art concepts, architectures, and techniques for working with Web-based GIS applications.”

Professor Xun Shi, President of CPGIS, expressed his appreciation, “We are grateful to ESRI for its support to CPGIS and to GIS education. I believe that many CPGIS members will benefit from this book in both teaching and research, and since GIS education is a core mission of CPGIS, hopefully this benefit will be passed forward to an even larger number of students worldwide.”
