Describe:  Are you an academic with the capability, ingenuity and initiative to collaborate with our established team in spatial science and urban analytics, and drive this activity to higher levels? Are you passionate about delivering an exceptional student experience in a research-intensive Russell Group University? Are you determined to attract research funding and develop high-quality publications in urban analytics and spatial data science? The Centre for Spatial Analysis and Policy in the School of Geography is home to world-leading research in the use of data science and artificial intelligence in the fields of computational geography and social science. Our researchers foster innovation in spatial data science, agent-based modelling, geocomputation, population forecasting, data visualisation, and others, to deepen our understanding of society and spatial/social processes, and to enhance our models of present and future social phenomena. Our data science and modelling work is supported by the infrastructure of the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics (LIDA). LIDA is an interdisciplinary research centre providing intellectual and physical space for researchers from disparate disciplines to come together and develop innovative and impactful research. We benefit from strong links to the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and AI, and its Urban Analytics Programme in particular. LIDA seeks to develop research that makes real-world contributions, working through active collaborations with policymakers and external partners. Building on these research strengths, we are now expanding our capability to produce world-class learning in this area through the launch of an ambitious new MSc in Urban Data Science in 2021. This post will support the delivery of novel and innovative teaching within this programme and others, and provide the drive and ambition that will push our group to new heights. We welcome applications from energetic and ambitious candidates with an emerging reputation in spatial data science, urban analytics, data science and associated areas. Your research interests should relate to but extend existing capability within our group. We are particularly interested in academics pushing new ground in machine learning within the spatial and societal settings, particularly those with a focus on urban health, mobility, economics, or sustainability. The successful candidate will be appointed to the School of Geography in the Faculty of Environment, and will also be expected to pursue an agenda of strategic value to LIDA, supporting its alignment with the Urban Analytics programme at the Alan Turing Institute. We welcome and encourage applications from all sections of the community. For this role we would particularly welcome applications from Female Academics and Academics from BAME backgrounds, as these groups are underrepresented within the Academic staff in the School of Geography. We will select the best candidate solely on the basis of merit and ability to do the job.
