The Department of Geography at Oklahoma State University seeks a broadly trained GEOGRAPHER with expertise in Applied Climatology and Human-Environment Interactions for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning in August 2024. We especially encourage applicants who focus on studying the effects of the changing thermal environment on facets of human health, climate change mitigation challenges, modeling microclimates at the urban, neighborhood or community levels, or the human impacts on climate change and the environment. The Department places a high value on interdisciplinary scholarship. Opportunities exist for collaborative research within the Department and through campus centers focused on energy, water resources, unmanned aerial systems, and transdisciplinary climate science research. The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain an externally funded research program that supports OSU’s land grant mission. 


OSU Geography is a doctoral-granting department housed in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) with 15 full-time faculty members, 50 undergraduate majors, and 30 graduate students. The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Geography, Geospatial Information Science, and Global Studies as well as graduate degrees (MS and PhD) in Geography. Oklahoma State University is a comprehensive, land-grant, Carnegie Tier 1 research institution with more than 24,000 students from all 50 states and more than 120 countries. Since 2010, OSU leads the nation among public land-grant colleges and universities for Native Americans who have completed degrees. It has also been nationally recognized for its commitment to diversity and service to veterans. OSU’s attractive main campus is in Stillwater, a one-hour drive from either Oklahoma City or Tulsa. Stillwater has an historic downtown, regional airport with daily flights to/from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), highly rated public schools, and the newly opened McKnight Center for the Performing Arts.

Qualifications

We seek candidates who can create an inclusive learning environment for all students regardless of background. A commitment to active pedagogy, student success, and excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching is essential. Desired qualities include an ability to teach graduate and undergraduate courses such as Climatology, Meteorology, Introduction to Physical Geography, Field Techniques, Climate Change, and/or a seminar related to the candidate’s area of specialization. The position also entails service at the department, college, and university level. 

A PhD in Geography or a related field is expected at the time of appointment.
