CPGIS 2012 Annual Meeting

The 20th Geoinformatics conference, Geoinformatics 2012, was held on June 15-17, 2012 in Hong Kong, China. The conference was co-organized by the Institute of Space and Earth Information Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the National Remote Sensing Center of China, and CPGIS.

The conference received about 350 submissions with 250 accepted for oral presentations and 30 accepted for poster presentations. There were two keynote speech sessions, nine special-topic sessions, 25 regular oral sessions, one poster session, and three discussion panels in the conference. About 700 people attended the conference. They were from mainland China, US, Hong Kong, Taiwan, UK, Canada, Germany, Japan, Thailand, France, Singapore, Ireland, and Nigeria.

Seven renowned scholars were invited to give keynote speeches, including Michael Goodchild, Che Kwan Shum, Deren Li, Michael Batty, Gennady Andrienko, Mei-Po Kwan, and Peng Gong. Their topics cover digital earth, sea level change detection, virtual geographic environment, spatial-temporal analysis, spatial uncertainty, and new geoinformatics tools for global change studies.

The celebration of CPGIS 20th anniversary was held during the conference. Roger Tomlinson and Jack Dangermond became new honorary members of CPGIS. Roger Tomlinson received the first CPGIS’ Chen Shupeng Life Achievement Award. Michael Goodchild and Chaowei Yang received the first CPGIS’ Education Award. During the conference, CPGIS members from around the world reviewed and celebrated the accomplishments of CPGIS and envisioned its future in the next 20 years.
