For those who have Chinese passport and US green card (or F1, J1 and H1 visa) and are planning to go to Taiwan for Geoinformatics 2014, you have three options:

  1) You fly to Taiwan from USA directly, you just need to apply for a Taiwan visa;

  2) You fly to mainland China and then, go to Taiwan, you need to apply a Hong Kong (or third country) visa and a Taiwan Visa.  It is not difficult to get both visas in US, but you need to prepare for the two visas early (i.e., 3 months before the conference). You can not come to Taiwan from mainland just with a Taiwan visa. You need to go to Hong Kong (or third country) first, then enter Taiwan with a Taiwan visa.

  3) You can apply a Travel Permit for Mainlanders to Enter and Exit Taiwan Taiwan Tong Xing Zheng) in mainland, then you can enter Taiwan from mainland China with a Chinese passport and this permit.

   In conclusion, for those without an USA passport, option 2 is better if you want to come to China first next summer.
