General Information

Currency: Canada’s currency is the Canadian dollar (CAD). It is available in 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar paper notes. Canadian coins circulate as: 5 cents (nickel), 10 cents (dime), 25 cents (quarter), CAD 1 (loonie), and CAD 2 (toonie).
Electricity: The standard voltage in Canada is 120 V (with a standard frequency of 60 Hz) rather than the 220 volts used in other coutries and regions such as China and Europe. There are two associated plug types, types A and B. Plug type A is the plug which has two flat parallel pins and plug type B is the plug which has two flat parallel pins and a grounding pin.
 

Weather: August is one of the hottest times of the year in Toronto, with daily average temperatures ranging from a high of 25C (77F) to a low of 17C (63F) and an overall average of 21C (70F). The highest temperatures in the month can reach somewhere between 35C to 40C. August has some of the year’s most sunshine with an average of ten hours a day.

Time Zone: The time zone in Toronto is Eastern Standard Time (EST, GMT/UTC – 5h) or Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, GMT/UTC – 4h), Toronto starts Daylight Saving Time on Sunday March 10, 2024 at 2:00 AM local time and ends Daylight Saving Time on Sunday November 3, 2024 at 2:00 AM local time.
Taxes: Toronto has a Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) of 13% on most items purchased in shops and on restaurant meals. Effective May 1, 2023, the City of Toronto implemented a six per cent (6%) Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) on hotels in Toronto.
